Southworth Park

 Southworth Park

We had a ball walking up to Southworth Park and playing in the woods last week. The cooperative play that we saw happen was incredible.  My favorite story was when one of our younger students (C) was having a hard time climbing over a huge rotting log and one of our older boys (G) saw his younger classmate struggle.  G. suggested walking around the log.  When C. didn't want to walk around, G. talked him through how to climb over the log.  When that didn't work, G. climbed down and demonstrated step by step how to do it.  Still struggling, G. gave C. a little boost and up and over he went.  The patience and determination of both boys was incredible to watch.  I was so happy that I wasn't at the log when C. began to struggle.  I might have started with the boost up and then the cooperation would have never happened.  G. wouldn't have had the opportunity to be a leader and a teacher, and C wouldn't have felt the pride of accomplishment.  It is so important to let children try and figure things out on there own.

C walks along a walk wall.  That takes some good balance!

A. and G. observe two caterpillars "racing".

A. collects apple to count.

K. eats his snack and listens to a story.

T. listens to the story after he has finished his snack.

C. takes off her mask so she can eat.

T. and C explore in the woods.

G. enjoys his snack at the park.

C. attempts to pull down a leaning tree.  After much effort, he decided that the tree should stay.

K, G, N. did there best to pound the rotting log to pieces.

G. and A. demonstrate to C. and T. how to chop, hammer, and cut apart the rotting log.

A. climbs over the rocks.

S. and A. sign along with the class.
