Science Looks like Many Things!

Science Looks Like Many Things How do I build a damn that doesn't let the water through? Preschoolers learn about the world around them while they play.  They inspect and observe things.  They experiment by doing and redoing.  More often then not, they don't even realize that they are learning science. To them it is just playing.  This is why it's so important to let your preschoolers play outside, get wet, get dirty, try things that you as an adult know won't work, but they haven't learned yet.  Their curiosity will lead their play and the more open ended activities they do the more they will begin to learn and understand the world around them.  You can help guide their learning by joining in on their play.  Ask them questions: why did you try that? What else could you try?  It can be hard to stop yourself from instructing them or telling them something won't work or how to do something better, but try it.  Trial and error is a great learning process to childr

Southworth Camp Fire

Our First Two Camp Fires of the Year! We had a great time collecting sticks, crumpling paper and watching the fire.  Before lighting our first fire we discussed fire safe.  The kids were all very careful around the fire and excited to watch the popcorn pop.  Sadly, due to the lack of rain, we were able to have another fire until today, but today we were right back at it and made apple sauce over the fire.  We had such a fun time building the fire, cutting the apples, watching them cook, running the boiling apples through the food mill, and best of all... eating the apple sauce! Cutting the apples! Cooking the apples.   Woohoo! The apples are soft! Milling the apples. Time for the taste test. Building our first first. NW and LF collect twigs for our fire. Fire safety lesson. Making popcorn! Time to eat it! Hanging at Southworth Park Team work!
