VELS: Vermont Early Learning Standards

VELS: Vermont Early Learning Standards The learning process for preschoolers looks very different than that of older students.  Preschoolers are like sponges that soak up information all day long.  This process is not always obvious to people who don't work with this age student.  To many, the learning process of a preschooler looks more like play than what most of us think of when remembering our own schooling... sitting at desks, learning the "letter of the week", learning numbers, letters, and shapes from workbook pages...   The preschoolers at Westshire are exposed to early academic skills such as learning letters, numbers, shapes, and colors as well as sorting objects, measuring, counting, ordering, and so much more.  There are times when the students will sit at a table and work on these skills specifically while playing board games, "building their name", cutting shapes for art projects, and participating in other seated activities, but more often, these

Newmont Farm

Newmont Farm From what I have heard through the students, Julie and Jill, the field trip to the farm was a lot of fun.  The kids enjoyed meeting the cows, especially the baby cows, and seeing where milk comes from. The pumpkins that the kids are bringing home are also from the Newmont Farm, donated by the Gladstone family.

Meet Grandma Joan

Meet Grandma Joan Grandma Joan, as she is widely known amongst my friends and their children (now in their teens and 20s), has been and is planning to continue volunteering in our classroom once a week.  Years ago she taught 1st grade and continues to enjoy working with young children.  She lives in the area and has raised three children of her own (me being the youngest of the three).  She is an active community member and part of the Lions Club and PEO (a women's organization that supports women's education).    Announcements and reminders: 1. Please sign up for the field trip to Newmont Farm on Friday, October 21st.   2. No school on October 10 - Indigenous People's Day 3. No Preschool on October 13 and 14. The preschool staff will be going to the VTAECY (preschool) conference in Burlington on both days. K-12 still has school.
