Probiotics and Antioxidants

Image
Probiotics and Antioxidants Today Ms. Katie returned to our classroom and talked to the kids more about healthy food choices.  The kids enjoyed helping make frozen yogurt popsicles that we'll eat tomorrow during snack.  Katie briefly explained to the students how yogurt has probiotics in it that help the gut/belly stay healthy, and blueberries have antioxidants that are good for the brain and heart.  We didn't cover the fact that blueberries are considered a Superfood that lowers the risk of heart disease and cancer and are also an anti-inflammatory (a bit above the preschool understanding).    The take-home message was that yogurt and blueberries are healthy food choices.

Eating the Rainbow

Katie Cole, our Farm to School and Outdoor Education Assistant, visited our class two weeks ago and taught the students a lot about healthy food choices.  We talked about different fruits and vegetables, their colors, and what part of the body those foods help: red foods help heart health and memory, and green foods help bones, teeth, and eyes... (see the chart above).  After learning about these foods and how they help us stay healthy, we made veggie wraps for snack.  I was impressed with how all the students at least tried their wrap and many of them ate the whole thing. Once again, we highly encourage families to send in healthy choices for snacks and lunches.  We always have the students start with their healthy (or growing) food before they can eat their sugary treats.  Please save candy for home.
